In 1892 the Italian-American Exposition was held in Genoa to celebrate the 400 years since the discovery of America. Set up in the Bisagno esplanade (the area currently between Piazza Verdi and Piazza della Vittoria), it would register more than 800 thousand visitors. In the name of Genoa’s famous citizen, Christopher Columbus, the city grows and internationalizes itself.
